AC Not Cooling in Vadodara’s Summer Heat? 7 Reasons Why — and What to Do Before Calling a Technician
If you live in Vadodara, you already know — summer here is not a joke.
From March onwards, temperatures start climbing. By April and May, stepping outside feels like opening an oven door. And in the middle of all that heat, the one thing standing between you and complete misery is your air conditioner.
So when your AC suddenly stops cooling — when it’s running, the fan is blowing, but the room just isn’t getting cold — that feeling of panic sets in fast. Especially at noon on a 44°C afternoon.
Before you call a technician or assume the worst, take a breath. The majority of AC cooling problems in Vadodara homes and offices come down to a handful of very common, very fixable causes. Some of them you can sort out yourself in 10 minutes. Others need a professional — but at least you’ll know what you’re dealing with.
Here are the 7 most common reasons your AC is not cooling — and what to do about each one.
1. Dirty or Clogged Air Filter
This is the number one reason ACs stop cooling properly — and the most overlooked one.
Your AC pulls indoor air through a filter before cooling it and circulating it back into the room. Over time, that filter collects dust, hair, and debris. In Vadodara, where dust levels are already high and ACs run almost continuously for 6–7 months a year, filters get clogged faster than in cooler cities.
When the filter is blocked, airflow through the unit is restricted. The AC struggles to pull in enough air to cool, the evaporator coil gets too cold and sometimes freezes, and what comes out of your vents is barely a whisper of cool air.
What to do: Locate the filter panel on your indoor unit (usually a slide-out panel at the front or bottom). Remove the filter and check it. If it’s visibly grey and caked with dust, clean it under running water, let it dry fully, and reinstall. Do this every 2–4 weeks during peak summer use.
If cleaning the filter doesn’t bring cooling back within an hour, something else is likely going on too.
2. Low Refrigerant (Gas Leak)
Refrigerant — commonly called “AC gas” — is the substance that actually makes your air conditioner cool. It absorbs heat from inside your room and releases it outside. Without enough refrigerant, your AC simply cannot cool, no matter how long it runs.
Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up” like fuel. If your AC is low on gas, it means there’s a leak somewhere in the system — either in the copper pipes, the coil connections, or the valves.
Signs of low refrigerant include:
- AC runs continuously but the room never gets cold
- Ice forming on the copper pipes or the indoor unit
- A hissing sound from the indoor or outdoor unit
- Higher than usual electricity bills
What to do: This one needs a technician. Refrigerant top-up without fixing the leak is a temporary fix — the gas will leak out again within weeks. A proper diagnosis involves checking for the leak source, repairing it, and then recharging the gas to the correct level.
3. Dirty Condenser Unit (Outdoor Unit)
Your AC has two units — the indoor unit that blows cool air into the room, and the outdoor unit (the condenser) that releases the heat absorbed from inside.
If the outdoor unit is caked with dust, leaves, bird nests, or general debris — which happens very commonly in Vadodara’s dusty environment — it can’t release heat efficiently. The result is that the entire cooling cycle is disrupted. The AC works harder, gets hotter, and cools less.
Check your outdoor unit. Is it blocked? Is there a wall, a grille, or accumulated rubbish right up against it preventing airflow? Is the metal fin surface (the grid-like outer part) visibly dirty?
What to do: Ensure at least 1–2 feet of clearance around the outdoor unit. Do not cover it or place it in an enclosed space without ventilation. For cleaning the fins and coil, call a technician — spraying water incorrectly on an outdoor unit can damage electrical components.
4. Thermostat Set Incorrectly or Malfunctioning
It sounds too simple — but it happens more than you’d think.
If your thermostat is set too high (say, 28°C or 30°C in a room that’s already 30°C), the AC technically won’t “switch on” full cooling mode because it thinks the room is already at the target temperature. Set it to 24°C and see if the cooling improves.
Also check: is the AC set to “Fan” mode instead of “Cool” mode? In fan mode, the AC circulates air but doesn’t activate the refrigeration cycle — so no cooling happens. It’s a surprisingly common accidental setting, especially after someone plays with the remote.
What to do: Set the mode to “Cool,” set the temperature to 24°C, and the fan speed to Auto or High. If the issue persists, the thermostat sensor itself may be faulty and need replacement.
5. Ice Build-Up on the Evaporator Coil
If your AC runs for a while and then gradually stops cooling — or you notice ice or frost on the indoor unit or the copper pipes — the evaporator coil may have frozen over.
This sounds counterintuitive: how does something freeze inside an AC that’s supposed to be cooling? It happens when airflow is severely restricted (usually from a dirty filter or low refrigerant), causing the coil to drop below freezing temperature and ice over. Once iced, no air can pass through it at all.
What to do: Turn the AC off and switch it to Fan Only mode for 1–2 hours to let the ice melt. Do not use sharp objects to chip ice off — this damages the coil. Once the ice clears, clean the filter and turn it back on. If icing happens again, you need a technician to check refrigerant levels and airflow.
Many homeowners try quick solutions when their AC develops problems. However, incorrect troubleshooting can sometimes make the issue worse.
Professional AC technicians provide:
6. The AC Capacity Is Wrong for the Room Size
This is a problem that starts from the day the AC is installed — and many Vadodara households don’t realise it until summer hits hard.
A 1-ton AC is designed to cool roughly 100–120 square feet in normal conditions. A 1.5-ton AC covers about 150–180 square feet. If you have a large hall or a poorly insulated room — especially one with a lot of west-facing sunlight exposure during Vadodara afternoons — and you’ve installed an undersized AC, it will run continuously and still never cool the room properly.
What to do: This isn’t a repair — it’s a capacity mismatch. A technician can assess whether your current AC is adequately rated for your space. If it isn’t, upgrading to a higher tonnage or adding a second unit for larger rooms is the practical solution.
7. Electrical or Compressor Issues
The compressor is the heart of your AC — it pumps the refrigerant through the system and makes cooling possible. If the compressor is not running properly, the AC will blow air but produce no cooling at all.
Signs of a compressor problem:
- The outdoor unit is not running even though the indoor unit is on
- You hear a clicking sound from the outdoor unit when the AC starts, then silence
- The circuit breaker trips frequently when the AC runs
- The AC cools for a few minutes, then stops cooling completely
Compressor issues can also be caused by electrical faults — a capacitor failure, a loose connection, or a power fluctuation damage. Vadodara’s summer power fluctuations, especially in older areas, are notorious for causing electrical damage to AC components.
What to do: This always requires a professional. Compressor diagnosis and repair is not a DIY job. A technician will check the capacitor, the electrical connections, the refrigerant pressure, and the compressor health before recommending repair or replacement.
A Quick Checklist Before You Call
Before picking up the phone, run through this in 5 minutes:
- ✅ Is the AC set to Cool mode (not Fan)?
- ✅ Is the temperature set to 24°C or lower?
- ✅ Is the filter clean? (Check and clean if not)
- ✅ Is the outdoor unit clear of obstructions?
- ✅ Is there ice on the pipes or indoor unit?
- ✅ Is the outdoor unit actually running when the AC is on?
If all of the above check out and the AC is still not cooling — it’s time to call a technician. At that point, the issue is internal — refrigerant, electrical, or compressor — and needs proper tools and expertise to fix correctly.
