Buying a New AC in Vadodara? 5 Things You Must Check Before Installation Day to Avoid Costly Mistakes
Buying a new AC in Vadodara feels like a big decision — and it is.
You’ve probably already spent time comparing brands, reading reviews, and going back and forth between a 1.5-ton and a 2-ton. You’ve looked at star ratings. You’ve argued about Voltas versus Daikin versus LG with at least one family member. You’ve maybe visited two or three shops and listened to salespeople pitch you on features you’re not entirely sure you need.
And after all that, you place the order — and the shop arranges for “free installation.”
Here’s the part most people don’t think about until it goes wrong: buying the right AC is only half the job. Installing it correctly is the other half. And a wrong installation undoes the benefit of even the best AC you bought.
Poor installation is one of the most common reasons new ACs in Vadodara homes underperform from day one — not because the AC is bad, but because of decisions made before and during installation that nobody explained to the buyer.
These are the five things you must check before your installation day. Get these right and your new AC will perform well, cool efficiently, and last years longer than one installed carelessly.
1. Tonnage: Are You Buying the Right Capacity for Your Room?
This is the single most important decision — and the one most often made incorrectly.
AC capacity is measured in tons (not weight, but cooling power). The right tonnage for your room depends on the room’s size, sun exposure, number of occupants, and how well the room retains cool air. Here’s a general starting point:
Room Size | Recommended Tonnage |
Up to 120 sq ft | 1 Ton |
120 – 180 sq ft | 1.5 Ton |
180 – 250 sq ft | 2 Ton |
Above 250 sq ft | 2 Ton+ or dual units |
But in Vadodara, room size alone isn’t enough to decide. Consider:
Sun direction matters a lot. West-facing rooms in Vadodara receive brutal afternoon sun from 1 PM to 6 PM — the hottest hours of the day. A west-facing room of 150 sq ft will need more cooling capacity than a north-facing room of the same size. If your bedroom faces west, size up by 0.5 tons from the standard recommendation.
Floor matters. Top-floor rooms — especially those directly under a terrace or a concrete roof — absorb far more heat than rooms on lower floors. Go a size up if you’re on the top floor.
Multiple occupants. For every additional person beyond two regularly in the room, add roughly 600 BTU to your capacity requirement. A bedroom used by a couple is different from a hall where five family members gather in the evening.
The common mistake: Buying a 1.5-ton AC for a room that actually needs 2 tons — to save ₹5,000–₹8,000 upfront — and then spending every Vadodara summer with a room that never gets truly cold, a compressor running at full load 24/7, and electricity bills that are higher than they would have been with the right-sized unit.
What to do: Before you finalize the purchase, describe your room honestly — dimensions, floor, sun direction, and typical occupancy. A good AC technician can advise you accurately. It’s worth one phone call.
2. Star Rating: 3-Star vs 5-Star — What Actually Makes Sense in Vadodara
Every AC showroom in Vadodara will push you toward the 3-star model. The price gap between a 3-star and a 5-star inverter AC of the same brand and tonnage can be ₹8,000–₹15,000. And the salesperson will likely tell you the savings “take too long to recover.”
Let’s do the actual math for Vadodara:
A 1.5-ton 3-star inverter AC consumes roughly 1.5 units per hour. A 1.5-ton 5-star inverter AC consumes roughly 1.0–1.1 units per hour. The difference is about 0.4–0.5 units per hour.
In Vadodara, where summers run from March to October — roughly 7 months — and most households run their AC 8–10 hours a day:
- Hours per season: ~1,800–2,000 hours
- Electricity saved per hour: ~0.45 units
- Total units saved per season: ~800–900 units
- At Vadodara residential rates (₹5–6 per unit): ₹4,000–₹5,500 saved every summer
The price gap of ₹10,000 between a 3-star and 5-star model is recovered in 2 summers. After that, you’re saving ₹4,000–₹5,000 every year — for the remaining 8–10 years of the AC’s life.
The 5-star model wins clearly in Vadodara’s climate. The long, intense summer season is exactly the scenario where the energy savings justify the upfront cost.
3. Installation Location: Indoor Unit and Outdoor Unit Placement
Where your AC is installed matters almost as much as which AC you buy. Bad placement decisions made on installation day are very difficult and expensive to fix later.
Indoor Unit Placement:
- The indoor unit should be installed high on the wall — typically 7–8 feet from the floor. Cool air is denser and falls naturally, so high placement ensures the entire room benefits from the airflow.
- It should NOT be placed directly above the bed or sofa where someone sits for long periods — direct airflow on a sleeping person causes discomfort and respiratory issues over time.
- Avoid placing it above electronics like TVs or computers — condensation dripping from a poorly drained unit can damage them.
- The unit should be on a wall where the airflow reaches the maximum room area — usually the wall opposite the longest dimension of the room.
Outdoor Unit Placement:
- The outdoor unit must be in a well-ventilated area with at least 1–2 feet of clearance on all sides. It releases the heat absorbed from inside — if it can’t do that efficiently, everything suffers.
- It should NOT be in a closed balcony, inside a cupboard, or surrounded by walls on multiple sides.
- In Vadodara’s intense afternoon sun, placing the outdoor unit in direct west-facing sunlight adds to the heat load it has to deal with. A shaded placement — without restricting airflow — is better.
- The copper pipe connecting indoor and outdoor units should be as short and direct as possible. Longer pipe runs reduce efficiency and increase installation cost.
What to confirm before installation: Ask the technician to walk you through the planned placement of both units and explain why. A good technician will do this automatically. If someone just shows up and starts drilling without a conversation about placement, slow them down.
4. The Quality of the Installation Itself
This is the part most buyers have no visibility into — and it’s where “free installation” from a showroom often cuts corners.
A proper split AC installation involves:
Correct pipe sizing and insulation. The copper pipes carrying refrigerant must be the correct diameter for the AC and properly insulated. Poorly insulated pipes lose cooling efficiency and sweat in Vadodara’s humidity, causing water damage to walls over time.
Proper flaring and connections. The pipe connections at both the indoor and outdoor unit must be correctly flared and tightened. A loose connection is a slow refrigerant leak — your new AC will be low on gas within a year and you won’t know why.
Correct drainage slope. The drainage pipe must slope continuously downward from the indoor unit to the outlet. If it has a dip or an upward section, water accumulates and eventually either overflows into the room or creates a mould breeding ground inside the unit.
Vacuum before gas charging. Before charging the refrigerant, the technician must vacuum the pipe to remove air and moisture. Skipping this step introduces air and water vapour into the refrigerant circuit, which degrades performance and damages the compressor over time.
Earthing. The AC must be properly earthed. Vadodara’s summer power fluctuations are real — proper earthing protects the compressor and electrical components from voltage spikes.
What to watch for: Free installation from a showroom is often done quickly and without all these steps. If the technician is done in under an hour for a split AC installation, ask whether all steps were completed. A thorough installation takes 2–3 hours.
5. The Stabiliser Question
Vadodara has a history of voltage fluctuation during peak summer — especially in older residential areas. A 2-minute voltage dip or spike during a hot afternoon can damage an AC compressor, and compressor repairs are expensive.
Most modern inverter ACs have built-in voltage protection up to a range of 160V–280V. Check your AC’s specifications — the voltage operating range should be listed. If it handles the range that covers Vadodara’s typical fluctuations, a separate stabiliser is not mandatory.
However, if:
- You live in an older area with known power issues
- Your AC doesn’t have wide-voltage-range protection
- You’ve had appliances damaged by voltage problems before
…a stabiliser is inexpensive insurance. The cost of a good stabiliser is a fraction of what compressor repair costs.
What to check: Read your AC’s specification sheet for “voltage operating range.” If it says 160V–280V or wider, you’re likely covered. Confirm with the installation technician based on your area’s typical supply quality.
